Now, the VOA Special English program WORDS AND THEIR STORIES.

Americans use many expressions with the word dog. People in the United States love their dogs and treat them well. They take their dogs for walks, let them play outside and give them good food and medical care. However, dogs without owners to care for them lead a different kind of life. The expression, to lead a dog’s life, describes a person who has an unhappy existence.

Some people say we live in a dog-eat-dog world. That means many people are competing for the same things, like good jobs. They say that to be successful, a person has to work like a dog. This means they have to work very, very hard. Such hard work can make people dog-tired. And, the situation would be even worse if they became sick as a dog.

Still, people say every dog has its day. This means that every person enjoys a successful period during his or her life. To be successful, people often have to learn new skills. Yet, some people say that you can never teach an old dog new tricks. They believe that older people do not like to learn new things and will not change the way they do things.

Some people are compared to dogs in bad ways. People who are unkind or uncaring can be described as meaner than a junkyard dog. Junkyard dogs live in places where people throw away things they do not want. Mean dogs are often used to guard this property. They bark or attack people who try to enter the property. However, sometimes a person who appears to be mean and threatening is really not so bad. We say his bark is worse than his bite.

A junkyard is not a fun place for a dog. Many dogs in the United States sleep in safe little houses near their owners’ home. These doghouses provide shelter. Yet they can be cold and lonely in the winter.

Husbands and wives use this doghouse term when they are angry at each other. For example, a woman might get angry at her husband for coming home late or forgetting their wedding anniversary. She might tell him that he is in the doghouse. She may not treat him nicely until he apologizes. However, the husband may decide that it is best to leave things alone and not create more problems. He might decide to let sleeping dogs lie.

Dog expressions also are used to describe the weather. The dog days of summer are the hottest days of the year. A rainstorm may cool the weather. But we do not want it to rain too hard. We do not want it to rain cats and dogs.

ThinkingI want to be happy. You want to be happy. We all want to be happy, right? And by happiness I don’t mean going to parties and joking around with friends or getting excited by rides at an amusement park. I’m talking about feeling satisfied with living a meaningful, purposeful life. You’d think it’d be a simple thing to accomplish, but so many of us get depressed, or feel frustrated, or we get that feeling that we are lacking something. And if we just had a little more money, or a slightly better job, or we had the right partner, that happiness would appear. As if happiness were always just around the corner, waiting for us.

The point here is that we make the mistake that happiness depends on circumstances around us, rather than on the way we look at those circumstances and respond to them. In other words, happiness or its opposite, misery, is actually a choice rather than a circumstance for most people.

To illustrate this point, Dr. Joel Wade, a psychotherapist, made a three-step list on how to be miserable:

1. Be as self-absorbed as possible. Make sure every situation at work or at home is primarily about your thoughts, your feelings, your welfare. Talk about yourself. Think about yourself. Make sure the point of every action is to get some kind of personal benefit.

2. See yourself as a victim. See the world as being against you. View others as the source of your problems. Blame them for your frustrations and setbacks. Tell yourself that you are helpless in your life circumstances.

3. Spend a lot of time ruminating (or worrying). Go over past negative events again and again in your mind. Think about things that make you angry or bitter. Remember how you were hurt in the past and who was responsible for your pain. Spend a lot of time re-living and re-experiencing these events in your mind.

So that is how to be a miserable, unhappy person. Are you doing any of these things? Well, if so, it could be the main cause of your feelings of dissatisfaction with life. The good news is, doing the exact opposite can move you in a more positive, happy direction. Those things are:

1. Absorb yourself in your work, friends, family relationships and outside interests. Move your focus outside. Become absorbed in what you’re doing. Remind yourself what you are trying to achieve. And if you don’t have personal goals – dreams with deadlines – set some.

2. See yourself as in control of your destiny. We all have problems and setbacks, but things only begin to turn around when you take ownership of your situation. Then you can begin to move forward.

3. Focus on what’s right with your life. This is not easy in some cases. Many of us are dealing with unfortunate economic or personal circumstances. Still, you make it worse by lying in the mud. Accept that the past is past. Forgive any people who have harmed you, not for their sake but for yours. Start imagining how things could improve. This is the first step toward action.

There is no doubt that life is difficult enough as it is, but the point here is that we make a difficult situation worse by our response to it. With the exception of perhaps extreme poverty andstarvation, happiness and misery are states of mind that we give birth to through our response to the world around us. They are choices available to us every moment of the day. Which do you choose?

Real English: Como convidar alguém para sair

Hi!

Neste diálogo nosso amigo americano Mark explica como ele faz para chamar uma mulher para sair nos Estados Unidos.

Enjoy!

Mike: OK, so for those of us listening who are not familiar with dating in the US, practices are different, Mark, how would you go about getting a date with somebody in the US?

Mark: Ah, well, I, that’s a difficult question because you know I don’t always succeed with that, but I guess usually you like a girl. You begin talking to her and find some things in common with her and, I don’t know, if you feel like she likes you and you like her then you ask her out.

Mike: OK, what would you say? “Do you feel like going out this evening?” or “What are your plans?” or “Are you busy?”

Mark: Well, those, all of those ways are so typical. Their so usual, so I don’t use those, I don’t say those things because I feel like it’s just too common, so I think women, or girls, usually respond better if you’re very direct, so I say something more like, um “So which is better for you, Friday night or Saturday night?”

Mike: OK, and they resond with a slapped face, or no? Then, what do they say to you?

Mark: You’d be surprised. Usually, it’s, um, some good responses. I mean if the person doesn’t like you then maybe they give you an excuse, “Oh, I’m busy Friday and I’m busy Saturday.” Well, that’s OK. Then you know, that that person doesn’t like you (right) but, um, but usually that direct question, it, the girl or the woman is often surprised that you’re so direct so she laughs and she tells you an answer, “I’m free Friday.” So you get a good response many times with direct questioning like that.

Mike: OK, and what would you do then on your, on a date? Would you say, “Great, let’s go bowling!” or?

Mark: I would set a time and again, I think it’s not so important, what you do, as it is important to, to just make a decision and to do it, so some girls might not like bowling but if you pick her up on a date and you say, “Hey, we’re going bowling tonight.” If she really doesn’t like bowling, she will tell you but usually if she doesn’t mind bowling then she’s happy that you made the choice. That’s better than asking her, “So, what do you want to do tonight?”

Mike: I guess especially if you’re the one spending the money for it then.

Mark: That’s a good point. Yes. Absolutely.

Mike: It’ll work out well for both. Well, thanks a lot, Mark. That’s great.

Mark: You’re welcome.
