Hello, everybody! How’ve you all been?

Na semana passada fui minder na 13a Braz-TESOL, no Rio de Janeiro. Um minder é alguém que mind (cuida) a convenção. Envolve praticamente tudo: auxiliar palestrantes, resolve problemas técnicos, orientar participantes y otras cositas más.

Vou contar como fui parar lá. No início do ano eu tinha decidido participar do Braz-TESOL. Já conhecia um pouco sobre como era a convenção pois a diretora de uma escola onde eu lecionava sempre ia e voltava cheia de ideias e coisas interessantes. Em janeiro entrei no site da Braz-TESOL, fiz minha membership e fui vendo o desenrolar dos posts no Facebook.

A priori eu iria somente como participante, para entrar em contato com novas tendências, materiais e conhecer pessoalmente um pessoal de ELT que eu só “conhecia” via Facebook. Em março (ou abril, não me lembro ao certo), um amigo virtual, o Paulo Pita, postou um link com passagens bem baratas no trecho Rio-São Paulo, especialmente para o pessoal que iria à convenção. Comentei o post e perguntei se ele também ia e ele acabou me convidando pra ser minder. Pensei, o que diabos fará um minder? Ele me explicou e eu respondi que adoraria, mas pela limitação física eu não seria de muita utilidade.

Ele rapidamente respondeu me animando que toda ajuda era necessária, pois fora minder dois anos atrás e também seria este ano, além de apresentar alguns talks e workshops. Bom, mandei meu currículo e uma letter of intent para os coordenadores do evento e guess what!, fui aprovado para ser minder. Foi um misto de animação e receio pois era um terreno desconhecido para mim.

Nesse meio tempo, alguns outros amigos do Facebook (Graeme Hodgson – Cultura Inglesa, Julio Menochelli – Macmillan, Paulo Pita – Cellep) já sabiam que eu também cantava e me animaram a enviar um e-mail para o Braz-TESOL e apresentar uma proposta de entretenimento musical. Ficamos em negociações para ver a possibilidade de isso realmente acontecer e o Vinnie, aka Mr. President, me enviou um e-mail com a boa notícia que eu iria ter dois momentos na convenção: um antes da abertura oficial (medo!) e outro antes do talk no plenário de ninguém menos que Jack C. Richards! Até então eu nao sabia quais seriam esses momentos (ainda bem).

Fui conhecendo um pessoal que iria à convenção e combinamos de ficar no mesmo hotel para rachar despesas de transporte. E chegou o grande dia! Nós nos encontramos na Faculdade CCAA no domingo, dia 15 de julho, às 13h e foi uma ótima sensação ver pessoalmente essas pessoas que até então só conhecia por foto. Fizemos uma pequena reunião com algumas diretrizes para o evento e nos encontramos na segunda-feira às 8 da manhã.

O trabalho é grande e extremamente prazeroso por causa, principalmente, das pessoas que estão trabalhando juntas. Foram quatro dias de convivência intensa, muitos momentos de alegria (e muita risada!), alguns momentos de stress, e “no frigir dos ovos” levo comigo ótimas recordações do Rio de Janeiro, dos amigos que fiz, dos contatos profissionais e também do aprendizado, que foi incessante.

Minha admiração vai especialmente para Vinicius Nobre, Versuka Gallo, Paulo Dantas, Ever Malvesi e Adriana Pavesi, que nos coordenaram com paciência, respeito e muita determinação. Senti-me útil, querido, respeitado e valorizado por uma equipe (organizadores e minders) de profissionais altamente competentes e experientes a quem devo meu máximo respeito.

At the end of each year I get to thinking how things have come along and I want to share with you guys what I am so thankful for in 2009.

1. My health. I had a hint of a flue in October and being sick sucks big time.

2. My family. Though I want to kill them sometimes, they’re there for me when I need them.

3. My friends. Some are more present, some are not so close, but each one plays a (major or minor) role in my life.

4. My work! Ah my work! I have had the best professional year in my life EVER! I stopped being afraid and took some risks. Some things didn’t work out, but most of them did and I’m so thankful for that!

Basically this is it, there are some other things I’m thankful for but they all fit in the categories above.

One of the things we talked about was our upcoming project that we are working on with Adir where we are going to record all the sentences from Adir’s e-book, Gírias e Expressões dos Seriados, using our special “Método dos Missionários”.

Adir was a little put out when we changed the cover of his e-book (There were some pictures that were a little risque, so we changed them for pictures of ALF, Monk, etc.) and Adir was grumbling to us about it. So I asked him what sitcomes he did watch anyway.

==> risque = “audacioso”, indecente
==> grumble = reclamar

He tried to get one (over) on us and shock us with all the raunchy programs he wanted us to believe he watches; and, of course, we produce his answer here without any tampering on our part…
